"Stem Cell Mobilization" - Hope for a Dying World? The advancement of stem cell research is capturing the attention of the nations of the world. Billions of dollars are being spent on the research of stem cells and what they can do to help fight disease. In California alone, Proposition 71 passed in 2005, allows for $3 billion dollars to be made available for Stem Cell research. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine monitors how the grants are awarded and follows up on their progress.(1) Why are people so excited about stem cells? Can stem cells really eradicate disease? According to a recent report on MSNBC - 92% of people who have insurance are on medications. Wow, we must be the most medicated nation in the world...are 92% of our people really sick? Let's hope stem cells are the answer. As a Christian educator and researcher I will explore different aspects of stem cells and offer you the hard facts of what is available to those who are dealing with health challenges. This way you can decide for yourself. Let's start with a little history. The first research on stem cells dates back to the 1950's where experiments were conducted that identified stem cells existed in the body and were able to regenerate over and over again. One type of stem cells found in the bone marrow were identified as having the ability to regenerate new tissue in damaged blood cells and skin. Over the next two decades bone marrow transplants were conducted to help those fighting many types of Cancer. For the first time in history researchers were able to regenerate damaged tissue by using stem cells that were differentiating into new cell types.(2) Once scientists saw how effective that bone marrow transplants were in fighting disease they then began to research stem cells from embryos. Scientists were excited because embryonic stem cells seemed to be able to reproduce every cell that existed in the body. But, it wasn't until 1998 that a team of scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison were able to extract stem cells from an embryo and keep them alive in vitro for an indefinite period. This is when the world started to take notice. These cells remained unspecified in vitro until the researchers wanted them to become specified into various types of cells such as liver cells, brain cells, heart cells, etc. This was the first evidence that the potential of stem cells could one day eradicate diseases of different organ types.(2) Now, its time to combine science and intelligent design. Science has determined that in the mother's womb every cell in the body originated from a single stem cell that formed what is called the blastocyst; a combination of 30-34 stem cells that have been specified by the DNA code in the original stem cell formed by the female egg and the male sperm.(2) I believe those 30-34 stem cells are intelligently designed by our creator to know what to do to form and develop the fetus. So, stem cell have been around since the beginning of creation. Most of the excitement has been focused on Embryonic stem cells because they are easy to use in vitro and scientists have been able to create cell lines, a group of specified stem cells, that they can use in research. They believed that adult stem cells are usually specified already and cannot be used in vitro.(2) It wasn't until 2005 when scientists discovered that adult stem cells, stored in the bone marrow, had the same ability to proliferate as their embryonic counterparts. This is a huge discovery. Some of the biggest problems with embryonic stem cells is that they have to be developed into cell lines before they can be injected into a human body. The human defense system will reject the embryonic stem cells if they do not match up with the person receiving the stem cells. This is why so much research has to be conducted. (3) But adult stem cells from a person's own bone marrow doesn't have this problem. So, the key to using the adult stem cells is to find out how to get more of them to proliferate in the blood stream. The adult stem cells in the bone marrow, after the age of 25, are released very slowly as a form of daily maintenance. The older you get the less is made available in the blood steam. The reason is adult stem cells are cell builders and by the time you are 25 you are full grown so the production of them slows down. (3) Scientists have been studying over the last few years this phenomenon trying to figure out how to get the stem cells out of the bone marrow. In 2005, a study was completed showing a natural botanical called AFA was found to release the stem cells naturally from the bone marrow. An active ingredient called L-selectin Ligand causes the bone marrow to release the stem cells and a polysacchride then helps the stem cells migrate to the areas of the body that need repair. Since the discovery of this natural growing blue green algae thousands of people have been receiving benefits from the the release of their own stem cells. (3) Stem cells, once released in the body, know what to do. I believe that God not only created all of the over 200 different cell types in the body but God also created the master cells, the stem cells, to be able to regenerate those cell types when they become damaged or diseased. Science doesn't have to take stem cells from embryos... there are billions of stem cells available in the bone marrow and....they never run out. I believe that God created our bodies perfectly and they were designed to live for a long time. Adam, the father of humanity lived to be 930 years old, his son Seth lived to be 912 years, Methuselah was the oldest recorded in the Bible at 969 years old. It wasn't until after the the great flood that people lived less years. You see, before the flood it had never rained on the Earth. There was a protective veil around it, not even the sun's harmful rays could penetrate it. But after the flood, the Earth started to die as it lost more and more of the natural nutrients that existed in the ground, water and air. (4) The people started living less and less; Noah lived to be just over 500 years old and by the time Abraham lived, he only lived to be 175. I believe that with proper nutrition and exercise that today... people could live to be 125 years old. (4) Now that stem cells have come on the scene; I believe that even more. The Bible promises a good long life of 4 score and ten which is 90 years for a life of faithful service. Could we make 125 if the Lord tarries? What do you think?
