"Obesity" The most costly, preventable, health epidemic to ever hit America! Tens of millions of Americans are dieting on any given day in America and spending billions of dollars doing it, yet America is still the fattest country in the world! According to the World Health Organization (WHO) web site 74.1 % of Americans have a BMI of 25 or higher with 31% being over 30 BMI; which equates to 35 lbs or more overweight. (1) This means that over 100 million Americans are walking around with an additional 35 lbs hanging over their belt lines. According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) web site obesity in America is now a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes.(2) Mississippi is the fattest state with 35.3 % of its population at obesity levels and 70.1 % being 15 lbs or more overweight. The least fat among all states was Colorado with only 18.9% of its population being obese. However, 55.6 % were still 15 lbs or more overweight. (3) The CDC also states that as of 2006, 5.9 % of Americans were extremely obese which is 100 lbs or more overweight. That equates to about 17,700,000 of Americans. Do you think we have a problem America? Obesity is not only pervasive in America, but it is also costly. According to the CDC, health costs due to obesity reached over $147 billion dollars in 2008 and are continuing to grow. Employers are losing millions of dollars yearly in lost time due to doctor visits and complication from obesity related problems. (4) Employers, even though the practice is illegal, are hiring less obese people due to potential loss time on the job. Obesity has more than doubled in the adult population over the last 30 years, but it has tripled in the children population. According to healthyamericans.org, "The childhood obesity epidemic is putting today’s youth on course to potentially be the first generation to live shorter, less healthy lives than their parents." (5) Why is this happening in America? Are American eating habits just out of control? No, it is not the people's fault. There are several reasons why Americans are getting fatter. 1. Americans are spending more time working these days trying to make ends meet and less time seeking out more healthy food choices. Let's face it, with $1 items available at all major fast food chains, it is more convenient and less costly to go fast food! These foods taste great but are full of high-fat - high-sugar calories that turn into fat when eaten too often and in too large of quantities."Let's Super Size it" is American's favorite lunch and dinner time slogan and its because it is easier to go that way instead of taking the time to cook meals and eat better choices. Do you know that a typical burger, fries and a soft drink alone is over 1800 calories? That is not double meat, double cheese, but a single meat patty. Those calories add up quickly and are hard to burn off while being inactive. (6) 2. The cost to eat more healthy foods has gone up and is gradually moving in the range that is no longer affordable to even middle-class families. The highest rates of obesity exist in areas with the highest unemployment and poverty. (5) 3. Americans are less active; TVs, computers, cell phones, IPods and video games are now the favorite choices for entertainment and getting exercise is only for a select few. When Americans do these activities they usually are snacking and eating more than they need because they are not concentrating on the meal, but the activity. (6) 4. Many Americans would like to get out and at least take a walk but now even the nicest of cities have crime problems that make it less attractive to take a quick walk or jog, and health club memberships are becoming more expensive each year. (6) So, what can be done? Are Americans doomed to a life of high-blood pressure, heart attacks, cancer and diabetes? No! There is a man that is leading the fight against Obesity in America. Dr. Wayne Scott Anderson, author of Dr. A's - Habits of Health, is co-founder of a company called Take Shape for Life®, (TSFL) which trains health coaches to assist Americans in learning to live a healthy lifestyle. Each new client learns: 1. How they became obese in the first place, 2. How to lose the weight fast and effectively 3. How to make healthy food choices for a life of optimal health. When 85% of diets are failing, TSFL has become a plan that Americans found safe, effective and life-changing. (6) The health coach services are free of charge and each coach takes a personal approach with each client down to daily meal choices. There are different weight loss plans available for teens, seniors, diabetics and anyone wanting to lose weight. The plans are based on eating six meals a day using portion controlled meal replacements (PCMRs). Each meal replacement has been medically put together to offer 24 vitamins and minerals, and a proper balance of macro-nutrients needed to create the best health and feeling of well being for each client. On the typical 5 and 1 plan, a client would eat 5 PCMRs and 1 lean and green meal which consists of three helpings of vegetables and 1 helping of lean protein, each day. The plan is very easy to do and is very affordable.(7) The Catalyst of the TSFL program is the use of Medifast® Meals for the PCMRs. Medifast® is a 30yr old, publicly owned company that has helped over 1 million Americans lose weight. TSFL is owned by Medifast®.
